Best Structural Steel Contractors in Nairobi — What to Look for Before You Hire

02 April 2024 4 min read

Six questions that separate professional steel contractors from the rest, and a short checklist you can use on every quotation you receive in Nairobi.

Choosing a structural steel contractor in Nairobi is mostly about avoiding the wrong one. The good firms feel similar on paper — registered, insured, with reference projects — but the differences show up in how they answer specific questions.

First, ask who does the structural design. If the contractor outsources to a consultant they do not work with regularly, the design will not be optimised for their fabrication shop and you will pay more for the same building.

Second, ask to see the welding setup. Shop welding under jigs is far more consistent than ad-hoc site welding. A contractor that fabricates everything on site is usually slower and less accurate.

Third, ask about coatings. A serious contractor specifies surface preparation grade (SA 2½ or wire brush) and the primer and top-coat system separately. Vague answers like 'we will paint it' should worry you.

Fourth, ask about safety. A zero-harm policy backed by toolbox talks and certified slingers is the minimum for any site that involves lifting.

Fifth, ask about programme. A credible contractor gives you a week-by-week programme tied to milestones, not a vague delivery month.

Sixth, ask about handover. Will you get as-built drawings, weld inspection records and a maintenance guide? You should.
